Chennai is one of the culturally richest cities in Southern India. Make sure to have some time to check out the temples and churches located in and around Chennai, or your trip to the city will never be complete. Start off with the St.Thomas Basilica, where one of the apostles of Jesus Christ is rumored to have breathed his last. Mary's Church (built in 1680), the oldest Anglican Church in India, is another place that you must visit. As for the temples, start off with the famous Kapaleeswarar Temple, famous for its intricate stone-carved artwork and architecture. The temple is said to date to the 8th Century, and thus has tremendous historical importance. Be sure to snap some photos of the highly detailed gopuram (entrance gate), which has a height of 37m! If you still have time on hand, do visit the other gorgeous temples, including Periaapaalayath Amman Temple, Kaaraneeswarar Temple, Ratnagirishwarar Temple, Ragavendhra Temple, and Shiva Vishnu Temple.
Got some time in hand for some wildlife viewing? Hit the Guindy National Park, which is known to be the smallest national park in the country. Also, visit the Guindy Snake Park, located just beside the national park, to watch some of the deadliest poisonous snakes found in India. Follow it up with a trip to the Vandalur Zoo in Tambaram, which is one of the largest zoos of it's kind in Asia.
When in Chennai, make sure you keep 1-2 days in hand for the beaches. The Marina Beach (one of the longest beaches in the world), Elliot's Beach and the Breezy Beach all can provide some respite from the sultry, tropical weather.
