Vaishnodevi Attractions
Temple of Vaishnodevi The most extravagant is certainly the temple itself. Its massive faade consists of many different buildings which are precariously balanced on a steep hill face. This is one place in India where you will see young, old, poor and rich all walking humbly in unison and harmony towards one cause. Strangely enough, it is not uncommon to see one of the high profile celebrities who try to blend in crown, in vain. The legends associated with this shrine are as fascinating as the Puja rituals. You can also see the engraved foot of the Devi and many other significant natural rock formations.
Temple of Devi Mai
Apart from the main temple there are many other places of religious importance which includes the popular Devi Mai temple near the town entrance to Katra. Pilgrims come here to perform paeans.
Temple of Baba Jitto
You will also love to visit the final resting place of probably the finest devotees of Vaishno Devi, the legendary Baba Jitto. A peasant by profession, Baba Jitto always stood up for the cause of much repressed lower caste which ultimately lead to death by his oppressors. Fervent devotees of the Mother Goddess come here to pay their respect to one of her most ardent followers. Ask for the dates of Jhiri Mela conducted near the capital Jammu to honour this great Hero.
Dera Baba Banda Temple
Another nearby temple is that of Baba Dhansar on way to Salal Dam. The temple is surrounded by one of the most beautiful natural springs. Thirty kilometers away is the Hindu-Sikh temple of Dera Baba Banda which provides most interesting views on how two different religions can become united under one cause.
Cave at Shiv Khori
Farther uphill is the Holy cave of Shiv Khori, located almost 70 km from Katra. It is a natural wonder with large hollow chambers that cast a mystical spell on many Yatris who strive to venture this far. Maha Shivratri festival, the impressions of Sheeshnag on the ceiling and lingam of Lord Shiva makes these caves worth visiting.
