Due to its strategic location, the Gibraltar Port has witnessed numerous battles and is now a maritime center in the Mediterranean. The Gibraltar cruise terminal and the city itself are a bustling commercial center with a diverse culture influenced by the Romans, Greeks, Phoenicians, Dutch, Moors, Spanish and English.
Gibraltar is known for its 1400-foot-high promontory that faces Spain. Archaeologists estimate around 140 caves and several pre-Neanderthal remains have been excavated. Despite its proximity to Spain, Gibraltar is a British Colony.
Shopping:
Gibraltar's duty-free shopping will surely be one of the reasons why you'll take home a lot of goodies after your trip. You can stroll along Main Street and browse the specialty stores like Marks and Spencer. If you continue on further to Main Street, you would see alleys with small shops selling glassware, porcelain, leather goods, perfumes, cashmere, silk and jewelry. Stores selling consumer electronics like cameras, mobile phones and PCs are also accessible.
The Gibraltar Crystal Factory is a shopping destination among tourists where you can witness master glass blowers creating their masterpieces. You can buy authentic handcrafted crystal glass items here.
Things to See:
Although the city can be explored by foot, it is not recommended to do so because of its geography. The city center is a mile away from the Gibraltar port of call and you can take a shuttle or cab for guided tours.
You can visit the man-made Second World War tunnels to see how Gibraltar defended itself during centuries of conflict between Spain and Britain.
A cable car from Main Street will take you to the top of the Rock where you can have an excellent view of Spain and Morocco. From here, visit the Barbary Apes at The Ape's Den. Beware as the apes will snatch your cameras, sunglasses and hats.
Entrance to the St. Michael's Cave is free if you have a cable car ticket. The cave's acoustic feature makes it a perfect venue for concerts, ballet shows and solo performances. Trekking the lower portion of the cave requires using ropes, stone blocks, pulleys and walking through slippery pediments. However, you would be rewarded with a view of an underground lake with stalactites and stalagmites formation.
A short resort course on diving is offered to visitors who want to see Gibraltar's more than 30 reefs and wrecks. Dolphin and whale watching are available during cruise ship excursions along the Gibraltar Bay.

An outdoor patio facing the Main Street is offered at the Angry Friars Restaurant. You can try their steak and kidney pie with a pint of ale. The La Bayuca serves Moroccan-style cuisine at an affordable price.
