City Palace is a marvellous assortment of courtyards, pavilions, terraces, corridors, rooms and hanging gardens. It is a marvel structure carved in stone and one of the most famous temples of Rajasthan. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Eklingji Temple was constructed by Bappa Rawal in 734 A.D. The Battle of Haldighati was fought in Haldighati, Rajasthan, on 18 or 21 June 1576 for around four hours between Rana of Mewar, Maharana Pratap and Mughal Emperor Akbar. Shrinathji temple in Nathdwara is dedicated to Lord Shrinathji (Lord Krishna). The term 'Nathdwara' suggests the 'gate of the lord'. Shrinathji Temple is also known as 'Haveli of Shrinathji' and makes a prominent pilgrim destination for the Hindus / Vaishnavas. The evening is at leisure for independent activities. After breakfast, proceed to Kumbhalgarh via Ranakpur. The beautifully sculptured Jain temples mark the glory of Ranakpur. Every temple has a conceivable surface carved with equal delicacy. The ambience of Ranakpur is mainly highlighted by the location and the almost divine architecture, giving the same hue as its counterpart - the great Dilwara Temples in Mt-Abu. Overall Ranakpur is known as ' The tranquil pilgrimage town'. Later drive to Kumbhalgarh. It is the second most important citadel after Chittorgarh in the Mewar region. Cradled in the Aravalli Range the fort was built in the 15th century by Rana Kumbha. Because of its inaccessibility and hostile topography the fort had remained un-conquered. It also served the rulers of Mewar as a refuge in times of strife. The fort also served as refuge to the baby king Udai of Mewar. It is also of sentimental significance as it is the birthplace of Mewar's legendary King Maharana Pratap. The fort is self-contained and has within its amalgam almost everything to withstand a long siege. The fort fell only once, that was to the combined armies of Mughal and of Amber for scarcity of drinking water. There are many magnificent palaces and an array of temples built by the Mauryas, of which the most picturesque palace is the Badal Mahal or the palace of the clouds. The fort also offers a superb birds view of the surroundings. The fort's thick wall stretches some 36 kms and is wide enough to take eight horses abreast. Maharana Fateh Singh renovated the fort in the 19th century. The fort's large compound has very interesting ruins and the walk around it can be very rewarding. The evening is at leisure for independent activities. One can opt to enjoy the Sound and Light show at Kumbhalgarh Fort. Overnight in Kumbhalgarh. (B, D)
