As a destination it has a reputation for the extreme and this, whilst undoubtedly true, can mask a wide array of sporting and leisure activities (particularly in summer), a great nightlife, and superb scenery that can be enjoyed at whichever pace suits you.

From the centre of Chamonix, a 20 minutes ride in the Aiguille du Midi cable car takes you to the gateway to the high Alps at a height of 3,842 m. From its height of 3,777m, the Aiguille du Midi and its laid-out terraces offer a 360° view of all the French, Swiss and Italian Alps. A lift brings you to the summit terrace at 3,842m, where you will have a clear view of Mont Blanc. Once at the top, do not miss the gondola lift ride over the Glacier du Geant to the Pointe Helbronner in Italy.

Later, visit Montenvers, the rack railway starts from Chamonix and, in 25 minutes, climbs to an altitude of 1913 metres where it reaches the bottom of the Mer de Glace, France's largest glacier (7km long, 200 m thick). The tour of the "Grotte de Glace" (Ice Cave) takes you into the very heart of the glacier. Re-sculpted every year, it describes the life of mountain people in the early 19th century.
